Who decides who is allowed to dance? How can contemporary dance education move towards an inclusive learning culture?

These questions are confronted by a mixed-abled team of dancers and dance pedagogues whose aim is to move towards accessibility in higher dance education. The team’s interest is to develop practical concepts and formats to create an accessible learning environment for dance students and dance enthusiasts. The Kick-off “Reshaping Dance Education” is based on the research process the group has done together. This workshop invites disabled and non-disabled dancers based in Frankfurt to join a movement practice and reflect upon the dance field with the perspective of access.

We will encourage participants to be open to diverse experiences and look into the daily practices of inclusion and invisible barriers. The working methods are based on dance improvisation and its principles as a dance technique that applies to different dance languages and body practices.

We will end the workshop with a shared space to reflect on the experience with various approaches such as drawing, sensing or writing.

Collaboration between Hannah Dewor, Annie Edwards, Pihla Jaala and Laura Ahumada García.

This research and workshop project is funded by the Hessische Theaterakademie funding program and is realised in cooperation with Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt. Therefore some of the Bachelor students of the dance department will be taking part in the workshop as well. The research process of the project took place in Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm.
